People are so bored with thier sheltered life, that they need an escape. Reality TV allows escapism because it allows the viewer to identify with the turmoil that the producers invent.
Also reality TV is relatively new to the market. Hollywood is so poor and boring now days that most everything has already been done. and now sooo much of movies etc. are a remake.
I personally blame lack of creativity!

because it takes one's mind off horrible neighbors and colleagues... a form of escapism, I guess. I'll be one to admit that I love reality shows like Amazing Race and American Idol, but can't be bothered about Big Brother, Survivor or The Real World.

I only like Laguna Beach and only season 1 and 2.
I think people are so bored with their lives that they feel the need to 'become" someone else...or something like that.....
I love Laguna because my high school years seriously sucked and I only have myself to blame, so seeing those teens having so much fun makes me happy....but the drama stuff, hate it! I had enough of it back in my own high school years. lol.

People like drama no matter what kind it is. They also like it when it's drama that's not happening in their lives because people are instinctively nosey and want to know what's happening in other people's lives. Reality show's also are like tv shows but without all the really fake stuff. Reality shows are exaggerated drama but they aren't like shows about explosions and crazy things that normal people can't relate to. The reality show's also show how people interact with others and is an example for some people.

sometimes it depends on the show, some shows are not really reality and are totally fake and stupid and others are really heart-breaking and i don't want to sound like a sappy touchy-feely person but sometimes watching shows that make you cry are good shows, because it's good to cry every once and a while. tha's the same way with books for me, for some reasion and I have no clue why i love boks that make me cry!

I agree with you. Most of those "reality" shows are scripted or cast members are manipulated to act in certain ways anyway. I guess some folks think it's cool to live their lives through someone else.

who knows. people are strange when it comes to what they like and for how long they like it. i, personally do not like reality shows. i think they create a false sense of reality for people. i mean only that does the world really need another american idol. do we really care if anyone can survive? i think we as americans should focus more of our attention on things like hunger, homelessness, education, and finding people to represent us in congress who will actually work with the nations best interest.
thanks and good day.

Novelty. Except the ones where they make celebrities suffer there is obviously going to be an audience for that.
