Because of the identity property, we can multiply each fraction by one. This one, however, can be written in many forms. In this case, we use x/x=1 assuming that x is not 0. We can therefore make these fractions have the same denominator:
-5/7 * 3/3 = -15/21
-1/3 * 7/7 = -7/21
Because these numbers are negative, the number closest to zero is greater. Therefore, -7/21, or -1/3, is greater.

The way you typed your question is confusing. If you meant "5/7 or 1/3" than 5/7 is greater. If you meant "-5/7 or -1/3" than -1/3 is greater.

1. fractions
to get the answer, make them similar fractions..
-5/7 = -15/21
-1/3 = -7/21 (this is bigger because of the negative sign)
2. decimals
-5/7 = -0.714
-1/3 = -0.333 (this is bigger because of the negative sign)
using the two solution, you will know that -1/3 is bigger. if you graph that in number line, it will be
<=====================>
-3/2...-1..-5/7..-1/2..-1/3....0...
numbers on the right is always greater than the numbers in the left...
hope that this will help you...
