Do you pull on a ring or a string or something? Obviously it would have to be something thats easy to find on your back.

IT is not on your back. The rip cord is usually on your chest on the left side. The one I had was a large loop that you pull and that releases the pilot chute which then fills with air to pull the parachute out.

Seriously, there is a D-ring you pull, which yanks a line that opens up the back, allowing the 'chute to come out of the pack.

pull a cord... or they can open automatically with an altitude sensor
