I was like this for my first test. I was soo nervous. But it really isn't that bad. Once you got the first one over and done with it is nothing. It should not be painful. My experiences after the first were NOTHING like the first. I am used to them now because I am pregnant and I need them a lot but trust me, it gets better :) Just make sure you don't think about it as much, and tell yourself it will be over before you know it :) Just relax. Goodluck

The best thing you can try and do is relax (easier said than done I know hun) try talking to the person who's doing it tell them how you feel and about your previous experience they should do all they can to make it less harrowing for you.

Girls it is vital that you have a smear, it could end up saving your life.Smears detect cell changes on the cervix which if needed can be easily treated, left undetected and untreated those changes could develop into cervical cancer, please don't put them off, if you're not happy go somewhere else please.

Having a smear saved my life last year unfortunately for me I had developed cervical cancer and had to have major surgery and I was one of the fortunate ones !

See if the doctor can give you something to calm yourself during the next exam.

Also try closing your eyes and breathing in and out slowly and think of a nice calming place.

When the doctor puts the speculum in, and their finger and presses, breathe out slowly.

Also before the doctor has you get in position let them know about your last experience and they will make sure to help you out along the way.

I go through the same things. Have them give you something for your anxiety. They always give me a pill of some sort to keep me calm. Then I just stay at the drs. office 30 minutes after my appt and wait for it to wear off. The procedure itself is really not painful, just uncomfortable. It is the anticipation and the fear that is causing you to react this way. This pill that they give me really helps that. Ask your dr. about it and good luck!

ask your doctor to use the smallest speculum he/she has. this may not curb the anxiety you feel with this exam but it will make it less painful. I am 50 yrs old and have a grown child. but to this day i still shiver when i have to go for this exam. my doctor uses a very small speculum and that helps. also, try not to tighten up. if you are not comfortable with your doctor find another one. i dont know if your doctor is male or female but personally i feel more comfortable with a female doctor. she would know exactly what you are going through. hope this helps.

Yes I have not had one since Iwas pregnant. I suppose it would be better to undergo a test that may save you from ovarian cancer.Next time take a friend along with you for support.

yes, ive never been for one and im 26, i worry bout it all the time coz i havent been to have one, but then book appointments and dont go coz i get too nervous.
Dont know why i am like this coz ive had a child and had plenty of internals, but i really clamp up and end up in pain.
i was in labour 14 hrs and the only time i had gas and air was to have the internal, it hurt like hell.

I do....I know how you feel.....I have been avoiding going to the doctor for one....because the last one was painful for me....I think it depends on the doctor...

The one that hurt was conducted by a woman...But all the others that I have had were done by male doctors....

I would suggest going to a different doctor...

I feel it helps with the discomfort if I try to relax my thighs so I'm not clenching in the area my doctor is checking. Also, I prefer a female gyne...I feel they're gentler.

Hope the next one's better!
