Schools should definitely be harder on their PE instructors. PE instructors need to be more encouraging and teach better teamwork skills. Physical Education should not just be about fitness in the physical sense but also about nutrition, challenging the mind and interpersonal relations because without these things students will fail in any subject.
The problem is not the not how hard the class is but what the instructor does with the time he or she has. Kids don't need a harder class, they needd a better environment to learn in and the educator should be held responsible for that.
A child who does poorly in physical education class has a lot more issues than that he just doesn't like to play sports....

OH MY GOD SOMEONE WHO UNDERSTANDS. My hand eye coordination is at 0 and my reflexes suck and I find catching a ball somewhat of a challenge. I have no clue what the rules of basketball are and I'm in a basketball module. You know they randomly pick teams like they go around the class going 'team blue team yellow' and I ended up with the team that had all the jocks in it. Mind you, I'm a 80 pound girl in the 9th grade and they were in grade 11 12. (Our pe class is mixed). Don't you hate having to basically run up and down the court just following them and you feel so insecure and on the odd chance they do pass the ball (like once every game) I always somehow screw it up. It was horrible. Wow sorry I just have a crap time in gym. Now anyways, I know exactly how you feel. its absolutely horrible because I feel so insecure since I can't do anything. You're doing the right thing by participating. No one likes a student that doesn't try. Just by showing up and participating and trying your hardest you will get a good mark. I know its horrible.. If someone told me this it wouldn't make me feel any better. I just want you to know that someone out here knows EXACTLY how you feel. I hate pe. Hate it. Gives my stomach a knot everytime I think about it. What helps is just taking it day by day. During gym, just think 'make it to the end of class. That's it. ' If you see people sneering and laughing at you (I've experienced this) ignore it. Those dickheads have nothing better to do. You don't need to be friends with them, don't try to please them.

Yes. For instance, my first semester of my sophomore year of high school we would run once a week, and the rest of the time we did free wieght lifting or played some sport like basketball or football.
Second semester was with a different teacher, but we hit the wieghts like there was no tomorrow and ran to get better...meaning we did it for a reason other than seeing who was the fastest in the mile. We did it for conditioning. It was almost like a faux football training class. Then once in a while we'd play football, but always ended in failure and he'd make us go back inside to work out.
So yes, they should make it harder and encourage it more outside of school.

Well in our liberal society it will never work. What will it gain to reduce the % of overweight youth by attempting to encourage gym, when Ma and Pa let juinor pump soda and McDonalds down his gullet, then give him an xbox360 for Christmas?!
I would say that yes PE should be encouraged, but then it will just get more students to make excuses as to why they can't or shouldn't attend.
Efforts should be to elimate vending machines in school and to promote several healthy meals during the school day, to keep the brain and body running at 100%.

no schools shouldnt have PE at all. Health class teaches healthy life choices, and sports are for the kids who are interested. PE is just a way to set nerds and jocks apart and make the fat kids feel bad about themselves. And you don't need to be sweating in the middle of your school day either.
