After the U.S. invasion of Iraq, Chaos reigned in the streets. The Coalition Provisional Authority, headed up by Paul Bremer, disbanded the Iraqi army and baathist-led civil services. This created a vacuum of power that caused the Sunni Iraqi insurgency.
As time went on, Shiites( the largest population in Iraq) gained more power in the new Iraqi government. Sunni foreign terrorists began targeting Shiites as a plan to start a civil war. The terrorists, linked with Iraqi Sunni insurgents, attacked Shiite Mosques, neighborhoods, and such.
Shiites began creating death squads to fight back. Many death squads are linked to certain Shiite politicians and the security forces. Now the situation is rife with tit for tat killings and kidnappings. Many victims that are kidnapped are later found to be tortured before being killed. A favorite Shiite torture method is to drill holes in their victim's hands. A common Sunni killing method is to behead their victims.
Much of the resentment by the Shiites go back to Saddam's brutal regime. After the 1991 Gulf war, the Shiites and Kurds rose up to depose Saddam. Saddam cracked down with his Republican Guard.
The Shiite Intifada, as it was called, was crushed. Shiites in Basra were punished cruelly by Saddam. These bitter feelings by both Shiites and Sunnis (exacerbated by our occupation) are the cause for the civil war.

The wave of hatred between different ethinicities in Iraq have increased since the US invaded it. That's because USA backed 2 parts of the Iraqies on the other part, it supported the shaii and kurds, while it forgotted about sunnies.
And the shaii militia are condemned with massacres against sunnies each day, for example today all the kidnapped civilians were sunnies.
In fact, it seems that even USA can't stand the shaii massacres, since fights were occured between al mahdi militia (shaii) and the US troops. And last weeks main title on newsweek magazine was : the dangeroust man in Iraq, moqtada al sader (a shaii cleric).
Hope everything goes well, and peace occure as soon as possible, because only innocent people are harmed.
