Let x represent Tom's age.
x - 3 will be John's age.
x + x - 3 = 88
2x - 3 + 3 = 88 + 3
2x = 91
2x/2 = 91/2
x = 45.5
Tom is 45 and a half
John is 42 and a half

The best way to figure this one out is to visualize an integral scale (think a ruler with 88 inches on it).
Find the middle point. Three point lower than the middle is John's age. Three point's higher is Tom's.

John's age = x
Tom's age = x + 3
sum of the age is 88 when:
x + (x + 3) = 88
2x + 3 = 88
2x = 85
x = 42.5

Tom's age = x
John's age = x-3
the sum of their ages = x + (x-3) = 88
so, 2x - 3 = 88
2x = 91
x = 45.5 years --> Tom's age
John's age = x-3 = 45.5 -3 = 42.5 years

T - 3 = J
T + J = 88
T - J = 3
T + J = 88
2T = 91
T = 91 : 2
T = 45,5
T - 3 = J
45,5 - 3 = J
J = 42,5
Answer: John, 42,5 y.o and Tom, 45,5.

J = T - 3
J + T = 88
(T - 3) + T = 88
2T - 3 = 88
2T = 91
T = 45.5
J = 45.5 -3 = 42.5
Check/Proof
42.5 + 45.5 = 88
