The differences between DVD-R and DVD+R are similar to the format war we currently are experiencing with HD-DVD and BluRay.

When DVDs were first being developed, multiple companies were competing for what would become the next industry standard, since there wasn't one yet. Companies joined one bandwagon or the other in what they hoped would be the more dominate standard.

Pioneer developed the DVD-R discs and were used primarily by Apple and Pioneer. The -R discs can only be written into one layer and are slightly cheaper than +R

Philips, Dell, Sony, Microsoft, and HP backed the DVD+R format because they can be written into multiple layers, resulting in better data storage and slightly higher capacity (although its not significantly enough for the average user to notice). Because of this higher capacity, the +R discs are slightly more expensive to manufacture.

A PS2 should be able to read both types, but I wouldn't be surprised if it has problems reading a DVD-R. Go with a DVD+R since it is backed by Sony.
