It depends on the degree of depression. Every one has mood shifts and sadness, but depression has a physiological component that is not cured by wishing or praying it away. True depression may be part of something else. At the very least take a couple simple tests on the net. If it is depression, see your family doctor first. It is not necessary to head to a psychiatrist unless you thinking about hurting your self or others. A psychologist can't prescribe your meds. It will not just go away, but will get better with treatment.
I wasted a lot of time getting to a doctor because I " didn't have the time " and being in the medical field did not want it known I was "nuts". Any one can have chemical imbalances.

Yes, absolutely. It may seem quite simple, but if you apply this technique, you will find it to be very effective. Okay, here it is, find a though that feels a little better, hold that thought for about 17 seconds. You may only feel slightly better, but that is a step in the right direction. Now, do that again, from that place, where you feel just a little bit better, think of another thought that feels better when you think it. If you keep up this process, you will eventually move up the emotional ladder and find depression as a state of the past.

First thing I would do is see a psychiatrist who can discuss your problems with you and then let the doctor decide if you should be on anti-depressants and exactly which ones and at what dossage. My father is a psychiatrist, so I know a little, but I'm certainly not qualified to really give you strong advice about this.
