What kind of animal? How small? What is your financial situation?
1) Cats
Pros: Constant companion, happy to be around, fun to play with
Cons: Costly in bills, allergies, costly to buy
2) Hamster/Gerbil
Pros: Easy to contain, low cost, fun to watch
Cons: Rodent-like, requires weekly maintenance
3) Hermit Crabs
Pros: Easy to clean, doesn't require much attention, can't escape
Cons: Still crabs, requires a new shell, requires a tank
4) Rabbit/Guinea Pig/Ferret
Pros: Can live in cage, provides animal comfort, fun to play with
Cons: Can be costly, requires special attention, can by costly, not always for families with kids
5) Fish
Pros: Easy to care for, easy to watch, easy to feed
Cons: Can cost a lot to set up and keep alive, still just fish
6) Dogs
Pros: Great motivator, great way to have a friend
Cons: 17 year commitment, costly to buy and care for, requires constant watching (meaning you can't just leave the dog inside while you go to school or work).
7) Snakes
Pros: Fun pet, can be entertaining
Cons: Can be costly, sometimes requires live food, requires larger living spaces as they grow, and if you aren't a snake lover, you won't love it
8) Frogs
Pros: Fun to watch, can live in a fish tank
Cons: Can cost more than fish, can die quickly and get out, and requires a constant temperature
9) Birds
Pros: Can be fun to have around, musical, entertaining, personable
Cons: Costly, easily stressed, often ignored and mistreated because owners don't understand the bird, needs medical attention regularly
9) Lizards/Tutles
Pros: Can live in a fish tank, requires less care than a dog, fun to watch
Cons: Can cost a bit to start up and care for, lizards can easily escape if you're not careful, easy to forget to clean the tank, requires a constant temperature
10) Spiders
Pros: Cool pet, easy to feed, easy to care for
Cons: It's a spider--requires special care some people aren't prepared for. Often is above someone's head as far as care goes.
Basically, when you decide on a pet you need to look at your situation. Can you afford a dog and do you have the time and resources to care for it? Pets aren't only about your enjoyment. If you get a pet, you have agreed to care for that pet until you cannot. That pet deserves love too.

It will depend on the amount of space you have available, how much time you can devote to a pet, also the cost factor of the care. Birds are nice, but messy, if you have a small place a cat is good because they are rather self-caring, put food and water out and litter box they fine, don't need to be wa;lked and can be left alone for periods of time.

Hey I would get a Rabbit or Hamster. I prefer Rabbit because they seem more lively but Hamsters are good pets also. But you need to make sure your child knows that the hamsters are delicate. I would get a Holland Lop rabbit that is nuetered or Mini Lop nuetered. They need LOTS of room you can get a cage then get a dog excersive pen for them in both live in at the same time. GOOD LUCK - Poppy Seed ;)

Rats make great pets.
They are inexpensive, quiet, easy to care for, can be taught to do tricks, and will form an attachment to their owner. Except for the tail, they look just like hamsters but are much less likely to bite. When my son was 4 he drowned one while trying to "give it a bath" in the dog's water dish and it still did not bite him.
I prefer the females because they don't have large genetalia dragging behind them.
One must be careful to not let them escape because they will quickly become as troublesome as their wild brethren. I suggest getting two as they are social creatures. (once again, same sex or you will have dozens in no time at all)
Definitely do not get a bird, they are messy and troublesome.

Depends on your situation. If you have the money for it, a ferret would be a good pet because they are really fun to play with, or even to just watch. The animals generally sell for about a hundred dollars each. If you don't have much money, I would suggest a rat. They are mild, and easy to take care of.

Small pets are kinda annoying I like chows and American Eskimos if you don't like a jumpy attention seeking pet and don't like responsibility a lot get a cat their quiet and sweet. If you mean "small" get a guinea pig or rabbit their smelly but I like them. All pets have good and bad really just depends on what your looking for and your personality.

Hamsters are active and cute and soft and fun to watch. Guineas are sociable and easier to cuddle with and furry. Cats are [mostly] clean, intelligent, feel good to cuddle [if will], and liek to chase away mice. Mice I've heard are easy pet to have, and seem to like running on shoulders. Fish are pretty, mostly easy, and very relaxing to look at. Too bad they always died on me...lol.. some reptiles are fun, and are not exactly social but dont mind attention and handling...kinda cool to watch...
