(November 30, 1912 – March 7, 2006) was a groundbreaking African-American photographer, musician, poet, novelist, journalist, activist and film director. He is best remembered for his photo essays for Life magazine and as the director of the 1971 film Shaft. Shaft became a huge hit in the 70's and throughout the years was never forgotton and soon resurfaced with newer faces in the actors seats. The movie continued to be a hit. Mr. Parks was one of few African Americans whose photography graced the pages of magazines long before it was 'popular', convenient, or necessary to display the works of African Americans. He was truly a pioneer in his work and his work ethics. He is truly missed.
