I have been eating yogurt everyday with L. Acidophilus. I also eat yogurt with Bifidobacterium or B. Regularis. I have been doing this after I took two short-term antibiotics. I am not on antibiotics anymore. Is the friendly bacteria I am eating in yogurt colonizing in my digestive system and intestines or does it die when it comes to the stomach acids? Does "friendly bacteria" come back after it has been killed after an antibiotic and how long does it take?

The truth is that if you eat yogurt or take pills they bacteria will still pass through the stomach. So if it killed the bacteria in yogurt it would kill the bacteria in pill form. These bacteria are called acidophilus. This means they are acid loving bacteria and yes when you eat them they will find their way into your large intestine and you can improve your normal flora by doing this. Yogurt is also a good source of calcium so eat up.

No. I take Kyo-dophilus. This is a supplement that contains both L.Acidophilus and Bifidobacterium. I take it everyday to keep my intestinal flora in check. This past summer I went over seas and didn't take it with me. I got a infection, had to use antibiotics, and ended up with a severe case of diarrhea. Now I have colitis which is the inflammation of the bowel and large intestine, due to the infection I had from the diarrhea which was cause from the antibiotic killing all the friendly bacteria. Its painful, and I have to suffer for months until I get back to normal and the inflammation leaves my stomach, intestines and bowels. So I know friendly bacteria takes a while to come back after using antibiotics. I'm still waiting for it to come back so I get back to normal and it's been 5months.

It sounds like you're doing the right thing. Just make sure that the yogurt wasn't pasturized after the bacteria were put into the yogurt, otherwise you won't get any benefit. It's somewhat debated whether eating yogurt with Acidophilus actually does anything, but it doesn't hurt. Your "local" bacteria will also grow back over time as they recover after all the antibiotics.

Probiotic bacteria such as Acidophilus favourably alter the intestinal microflora balance, inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria, promote good digestion, boost immune function, and increase resistance to infection. People with flourishing intestinal colonies of beneficial bacteria are better equipped to fight the growth of disease-causing bacteria. Lactobacilli and bifidobacteria maintain a healthy balance of intestinal flora by producing organic compounds—such as lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide, and acetic acid—that increase the acidity of the intestine and inhibit the reproduction of many harmful bacteria. Probiotic bacteria also produce substances called bacteriocins, which act as natural antibiotics to kill undesirable microorganisms.

Where are they found?

Beneficial bacteria present in fermented dairy foods—namely live culture yoghurt—have been used as a folk remedy for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. Yoghurt is the traditional source of beneficial bacteria. However, different brands of yoghurt can vary greatly in their bacteria strain and potency. Some (particularly frozen) yoghurts do not contain any live bacteria. Supplements in powder, liquid extract, capsule, or tablet form containing beneficial bacteria are other sources of probiotics.

Much of the "friendly bacteria" in yogurt can be killed by our stomach acids that's why I take all-natural Optiflora. This two-product system includes Probiotic (Bifidus & Acidophilus...microflora) + Prebiotic (FOS...food source for microflora. Patented guaranteed delivery of 500 million microflora to intestines.

The microflora are contained in a BB size capsule and is triple encapsulated using only natural ingredients to protect microflora until they are released in the intestine.

Hope this is useful and feel free to contact me with questions.
