The Ghost of Christmas Present wants to help teach Scrooge a lesson. There are two child-like ghosts: A boy, ignorance; and a girl, want. But Christmas Present tells Scrooge to fear the boy, ignorance, especially.

There is a social message to "The Christmas Carol" and Dickens is showing the reader that the social problems of "Ignorance" and "Want" are prevalent now.....hence their appearance with the Ghost of Christmas Present.

They represent exactly what thier names are.
