Yesterday I had a co-worker shift the blame from her to me to avoid being in trouble...now I may lose my job. Long story short..
I work in an animal hospital. She checked in a patient for a particular treatment and did not document necessary info the dr. needed as a course of treatment for the day. She told me about a treatment the owners did at home prior to him coming to us. At the end of the day he (Dr.) finds out the owners gave a treatment that impacted the animals potential healt. My co-worker told the Dr. that since I knew about this treatment I should have been the one to tell him, but company policy clearly states that if you check in the patient you are the one that is accountable. She let the Dr. chew my butt off and didn't even try to step in and tell him that it was she, not me, who was responsible. Now I am afraid for my job. This could destroy my career. (It is going in my file). Should I file a defammation lawsuit against co-worker?

Could you ask to talk to the doctor after hours to explain your situation? Don't go in pointing fingers in the other direction and say as much. "I think that there may have been a serious misunderstanding the other day. I really care about my job because I love the families and animals I work with, so I'd like an opportunity to tell you my side of the story." The vet may choose to talk to the employee or fire her instead. Good luck!

Isn't it on the paperwork that she is the one who checked the animal in? Were you not allowed to defend yourself? Can you make a written appeal and state it just as you told us here, askingyour boss to remove this black mark from your record?

No lawsuit yet, but I would go talk to the manager when you are calm, collected and ask what can be cdone to remove this mark, since it was not your fault, and in the future, if she tries this again, make sure YOU tell the doctor everything that she was supposed to tell him. Seems like you'll be doing two jobs, and you will be. Buit it will cover your butt.

You can only sue the coworker IF you get fired. And you know the income for that job - what will the outcome be for you? Likely not much of anything but pain and suffering.

Document everything - write it down on paper for your own records what happened, and keep track of every time she triesd to lay blame for something off on you. If you have it documented, then you will be the brighter star in the end.

We all work with jerks sometimes - some are just bigger jerks than others.

I would not file a lawsuit b/c if the Dr. isn't agreeing with you a judge probably won't either. You need to have a conversation immediately with the Dr. and tell him you thought he was aware of the home therapy b/c your co-worker was responsible for documenting this. Don't be afraid to stand up to a co-worker that will totally throw you under the bus.

The customer should remember the person who accepted them when they see them in person. Since you let the Dr. think it was you - there will be a question of either you covering for someone or you possibly trying to shift blame now.

Ask management to let the customer meet you and your co-worker together to see who did what. Also ask them to inform the co-worker of what they intend to do. If they deserve you as an employee, they will deal with it.

Your career demands action on such attacks. People are often too shocked to respond properly when they are being wrongly punished and had no idea what was happening until it's over.

Name names, or start looking at a fast food place.

Sorry for your luck sister, Your co-worker messed up by not getting the Doc all the info until it was to late.. then trying to pass the blame to you. Of course you to were to blame because you did not speak up when you should have. It does not matter who got the info first or who checked the patient in. Your priority should have been to the well being of your patient. If you were given this info you should have passed it on to the Doc regardless. Company policy is easy to hide behind maintaining your ethics well Kid we call this in the medical field CYA no matter what. Hard lesson to learn Good Luck

Do whatever you have to do to avoid losing your job. Talk to the Dr one on one, but don't just point fingers and continue the blame game. Bring up the valid points, sch as company policy clearly relieving you of all liability (if it's written in a contract you signed at some point, bring that to him, and show him).

If it were me, I would take revenge, and (as long as the case was solid in my favor) make a lawsuit and put her head on the chopping block.

I very much feel for you... it must be something to do with the moon. I had a co-worker sabotage me this week, too. But I'm the newbie and he's the pet, so I'm sure I'm screwed. Good luck. Yeah, I'd file something if you can get the lawyer to not collect fees unless he collects them from the other party.
