Being in a gang helps many young people feel like they are apart of a family that cares for them because a lot of times, they are coming from familys that arent supportive emotionaly or financially. Whereas, these gangs can show the person how supportive they can be to you financially(even though it is illegal monies) and come off as very nice and supportive like a family that would always have your back and never desert you...so sad but true, this is how many of us young people feel.

I think there is something tribal about it. Since time immemorial, people have "ganged together" for safety and a sense of community.
With the break down of the family unit, the separation of the extended family, and the sense of alienation that comes with our modern society, young people look for that sense of community where they can find it. It's no coincidence that statistically, most gang bangers have no father in the home and for that I must hold accountable women who think they can have babies without the benefit of marriage.
In many communities, the gang members are looked up to. Doing time is a badge of honor. If you try to get out of the gang you will be beat up, at best.
Personally, I'd like to see known gang associates "encouraged" to join the ultimate gang, the military. This would provide them with the discipline and self-respect so lacking in today's youth.
If they want to fight someone, let them fight our enemies.

Young people (generally) who feel they will never accomplish anything with their minds, talents, athletic abilities, or creativity then are forced to accomplish something using nothing more than intimidation and bravado. Gang members gain a sense of identity and importance because they are finally accepted by someone and finally feel a part of a "group." Gang members are generaly poorly educated, generally from welfare assisted homes, generally have no father or father figure in the home, and generally are non-white. However thuis typical make up is NOT to be misinterpreted to mean that these factors LED the person into a gang--they didn't. There are plenty of poorer people that never get involved in gangs, there are plenty of non-whites that never get involved in gangs, there are plenty of single-parent children that never get involved in gangs. It is just that among those that ARE in gangs--these are common characteristics.
