Actually, if nails were used, they were driven through his wrists, not his palms. But sometimes the victim was tied to the cross with ropes, so there might not have been any nails at all. The only gospel that mentions hand wounds is John. Apparently its author didn't know what really happened and so just made up this part of the story. What's funny is that people who claim to have stigmata usually mistakenly put the wounds in their hands because of the error.
