Something that is unique to the current view of children is a notion that they have a right to play. Childhood almost revered now and there are huge markets now devoted to children. There is a good book called "Children and Childhood in Western Society Since 1500" by Hugh Cunningham that traces how the concept has childhood has changed over time. It is an excellent resource. The UNICEF website also has information on the rights of children.
