my girlfriends parents are possibly the biggest gay bashers in the universe, to make a long story short, we just had a very digusting situation with her parents. while this was going on, her mother told her to get tested for std's and HIV/AIDS because she believes she now has it from being with another girl.
so should i take that as a personal insult, because she thinks i gave her daughter such a disease? its not like i have any history of sleeping around or drugs or anything actually, not saying that people with AIDS do but she really has no reason at all to think I have anything.

I am with you on this--I would be much more than offended.

But I really think it may just be ignorance (combined with their deep seated disapproval of homosexuality) that caused the remark. If it was mean't in a gaybashing sense then it should be treated the same as any bigoted remark--with condemnation or however you choose to deal with it. But if it was honestly out of total ignorance then try not to be too judgmental.

I know we often use the terms "gay bashing" and "homophobic" as virtual synonyms. But they are not. Gay Bashing is about hate. Homophobic means fear of homosexuals. They may have fear for a number of reasons. Most all of them are irrantional--but that does not mean the fear is insincere. And then too often--when we fear something we start to hate it. I think there is a bit of all this in what your gf's parents were saying.

She just doesnt understand homosexuality. It's true that homoseuxal MEN tend to have more STDs and they have to be more careful. You shouldn't be insulted. African Americans acctually have more cases of AIDs than gays. They just dont have a higher percentage.

I think it is just their ignorance. I don't think you should be insulted but I don't blame you if you feel that way. Lesbian sex is one of the cleanest sex acts out of all of the acts (male/male, female/male) so they should be counting their lucky stars.

I think maybe a few brochures need to be dropped into the mothers lap. If she ignores them then she is a dork. I think it's just another case of ignorance and non acceptance.
