The name of that fund is very misleading because UNCF scholarships are not available only to black students. Much of the money raised by the fund is donated to historically black colleges and universities ("HBCUs"). The majority of the student bodies of these schools are black, but all are open to students of all races and all have increasing enrollment by non-black students. Approx. 25% of the faculty at these schools is white. The UNCF does offer scholarships aimed at helping poor blacks (especially those who are the first in their families to attend college), but it also offers scholarships to students of all races. For example, it established a special scholarship allowing the child of any person killed in the 9-11 attacks to attend an HBCU.
I understand that it can be very off-putting to have a scholarship or institution that seems, on its face to be restricted to one race or ethnic group. A name alone can be a powerful way of sending a message of exclusion.
Almost without exception, the names of these institutions were adopted during times when blacks were excluded by whites from most major national institutions. These names were meant to answer racial bigotry and encourage pride. Maybe the time has come to revisit some of them to make them more inclusive.

If Blacks were no longer such an underpriviledged minority then perchance they would not want establishments to assist promote their training and to declare their sentual allure! As for a White elegance Pagents and faculty money take yet another look, there are plenty! some human beings have the myth that issues in this usa have in a roundabout way replaced yet in case you fairly talked to Blacks who understand issues are acutally a lot worse than in the 60s! more desirable than 50% of all Black adult males living in the city sector are unemployed and ruoughly28% between 16 and 40 are in the corrections equipment, and that is the economics of racism! Take 2 white actors who command a $40 mil. settlement and also you'll have little situation getting a producer to underwrite a romance movie. Take a similar script and put in Holly Berry and Densiel Washington and no Hollywood producer will contact it because the concensus is that white us of a of america won't be able to cope and may't relate! those information the position made sparkling in a PBS Documentary. and that i do no longer propose to signify that it is a Black discrimination concern actually Asians have even more desirable of a topic right here and Hispanics are begining to understand a similar. That propose no longer mere racism yet narcissium. Oh and by using how there are omit Litainos and omit Asian individuals too!

Brian, try not to have an issue about this because the UNCF was set up a long time ago.
Though set up to address funding inequities in educational resources for African Americans (then called by the old-fashioned term "Negroes"), UNCF administered scholarships are open to all ethnicities.
I've also provided a link to NAACP and you will see that this organization helps all minorities for equality.
I'm glad you asked. This information should help you feel better when you see these ads. People tend to think the "black" named organizations are always racist because they fail to research into it further instead of taking the word of some commentary from Y!A. :)

Yes, if you go to the library you can get info on all kinds of scholarship funds for different nationalities, races, religions, professions, geographical areas, etc. etc. this particular fund is well known and has the money to advertise on TV, so what's the harm in that? And as for the black colleges in the U.S., they are open to all races, i have two (white) friends that graduated from so-called "*****" colleges in North Carolina.

The United ***** College Fund is one of many specialized scholarship funds available. There are hundreds of scholarship funds and endowments that cater to a select group of people. Churches sponsor scholarships for members of their congregations, Companies for their employees' children, the Army for the children of Army veterans, etc. Businesses give away scholarships for "best invention", not to mention all the scholarships for which essays must be written on relevant topics to the sponsor. If you don't have an issue with those, why would you single out the UNCF?

Here we go again! Just for the fact that it bothers you, you have issues with blacks. I see adds everyday with white people in it and it doesnt bother me one bit! Why would it bother you if there's an add for The United ***** College Fund? There's adds for all sorts of organization but the only one bothering you is the one for that has to do with blacks. By the way: Its COLLEGE....not COLLAGE!

Racism is still around. Statistically, average incomes for non-white families are lower than average incomes for white families. The UNCF is a way of bridging that gap. Because of this income gap, white kids TEND to have more opportunities for extra tuition, music lessons, etc that make them more likely to get merit scholarships and such.
Maybe we're getting to the point where these inequalities aren't as obvious as they were when I was a kid; if that's so, it's due in no small part to organizations like the UNCF -- we can't pull the plug now.

How about this...
How would you feel if there were no college funds for minorities?
How would you feel if Colleges didn't admit minorities?
Would you feel bad? I know i would.
Thats why this fund and others exist, because that used to be true. Thats why HBC's came in to existence.
Try looking up the United ***** College Fund, and do some research.

Black colleges were originally formed for obvious reasons. The white people of the past would not allow blacks the opportunities to get a higher education. Your and my tax dollars go toward Universitys and colleges in your appropriate states. The black colleges are private universitys so thus they have to derive their fundings in a different manner. In modern times, anyone who is qualified of any race is welcome to enroll and attend black colleges if they so desire. We have come a long way a human beings from the days when Southern Universities shunned blacks from their all white colleges in years past and it actually took the National Guard to protect black students from lynch mobs in the 60s so they could attend their classes and in some cases governor of certain states actually blocked black students from attending Southern Colleges even though they were accepted by the college administrations. This is why all black colleges are located in the south. They were born out of necessity and their legacy goes on.
