The designations "left" and "right" can be traced back to the British House of Parliament, in which liberals sit on the left side, and conservatives sit on the right. "Centrist" is a newer term, and refers to a political view balanced between the liberal and conservative viewpoints. Likewise, "very-left" liberal refers to a political view to the left of the dominant liberal position, such as Socialists compared to US Democrats, or Canadian liberals compared to American liberals (in general, of course). Libertarian adopts the social liberalism of the american left (the idea that government shouldn't interfere in people's personal matters, such as sexual relationships, abortion, or censorship of art) and the fiscal liberalism of the american right (the idea that the government should not tax people, not provide social welfare services to those in need, and allow business to engage in any activity it wants to).

It depends, the political spectrum is a circle really, because people can be right on social morals, but very protectionist even populists on economic issues, and the left could be very liberal on social, and believe in a strong safety net, but also are more free-market, and open trade then some on the right. Libertarians are liberals on social norms, but more right on economic issues with open trade, low taxes, but do not like social programs. Remember, GOP is slight between libertian, and right wing populists. The democrats the same liberals,.and left-wing populists. Personally populism is toxic mix look at the 1970s around the world that where we are heading if we don't pull are head out of the sand. Left and right spectrum is too simple to understand politics its more like a circle or 3d globe to understand the political spectrum.

The following links provide a slightly less "biased" definition of right and left wing with: Right = Conservative Left = Liberal Also, keep in mind that the definitions of what constitutes Liberal or Conservative policy depends on what country you're talking about, but in general they are fairly similar.

Right or left are said to describe what political views/philosophies a person has. Right is conservative and left is liberal (libertarian is actually both, some right and some left). Hitler was at the extreme right and Stalin was at the extreme left. There are different degrees of left and right from moderate to extreme.

Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Left-Right_politics as your question is way to broad to be answered here.
