My husband's 14 year old daughter wants to go to her 16 year old boyfriend's Christmas work party tomorrow. Her mother has given permission but my husband and I both think that a Christmas party for builders is an inappropriate place for a 14 year old schoolgirl. Are we wrong?

Thanks for the support. I'd love to know why this question got 2 thumbs down though.

look I'm a 16 year old girl and i know how 16 year old guys think i personally would not let her go. most 16 year old guys have only one thought about younger girls and most 14 year old girls don't understand every thing about sex yet so therefor they get pressured in to things easily and I'm not just talking about sex stop and think about who and what could be at this party my mom rarely (if ever) let me go use to get soooooo mad but i now am thankful!

It doesn't sound like a great idea - I'd be concerned if this were my daughter. The mother may have given permission but if the dad thinks this isn't good then he needs to discuss with mom and both have to arrive at a consensus to let her go. You can give your opinion, but it's really up to mom and dad.

14 does seem a bit young but perhaps if you were to arrange for her and her boyfriend to be picked up from the party to make sure they get home ok? I am sure the boyfriend would keep an eye on her at the party, and make sure his builder friends don't over-step the mark with 'his' girl!

Nightmare! You're not wrong at all.

I think your husband should have a chat with the mother... She needs to think about her answer again and tell the daughter to get some homework done instead of going to a party full of builders!

Not at all. Definitely inappropriate for a 14 year old.

I told my daughter she cannot date until she is 16 and a half. At 14 she is too vulnerable. I would reign her in a do the tough love thing, she‘ll thank you some day.

you are not wrong for thinking that but if you let the daughter go to her boyfriends house or even hang out alone, than what difference does it make?
she's with her boyfriend. nothing is going to happen that shouldn't since he's there to protect her.
If you're concerned ask her about it, and tell her she has to be home by a certain time and lay down the rules for the night and tell her if at any time she feels uncomfortable, to call and you'll be there asap to get her.

I am no parent yet, but I do agree with you. I do not think that a 14 year-old girl should be going to a party without parental or any knd of suppervision.

It depends , but the fact is you are not her mother. I hate it when my step-dad tries to intervene in everything. If she is living with the mother then you both cannot do anything about. There must be a reason why she lives with her mother and not you guys if that is the case.

i don't ever think it's wrong to be concerned about your child. no matter what the age. i see it as a sign of being caring parents. some people don't care what their children do after they get a certain age. two thumbs up for loving your daughter
