my mum works at a school and she once taught a group to count back tem from a number they get the hang of it then they forget the next day

Because not everyone has a perfect memory. Do you remember exactly what you were doing five days ago at 3:49 P.M.????? My point exactly. Okay, so it's very unlikely that you're going to remember. My point is, everyone's memory isn't perfect, you should know that.

Because they are being forced to learn pointless and uninteresting information. It is a fact that when we are emotionally or intellectually invested in learning something, it will be retained.

Its called short-term memory loss, its quite common. Its one of many learning disabilities.
