The thirteen British colonies on the east coast of North America banded together to fight for independence from the British Empire. Britain also hired German mercenaries to fight alongside their army. France lent the colonial governments money to fund the revolution. It was called the Revolutionary War because technically, we were revolting against our own government, although the colonists didn't see it that way.
Long story short, the American colonists fought Britain. They barely won too.

England. The king had originally granted the States the right to govern themselves, it was law. He gave it to them through the charters. Then he changed his mind. So basically, he broke the law.
