What about the poor, needy & homeless in the town in which you live in?? All around us are families in need! We need to also pay attention to our country before we run around always trying to solve things elsewhere. I'm not saying that Africa doesn't need our help, but plenty of families here in the USA need our help too!

Pookie was wrong about West Virginia and is now wrong about Africa. Most of Africa's poor are poor because of the stripping of national resources by people who didn't belong there. Other cultures built infrastuctures to support the colonists only, then people wonder why when the colonists up and take off, it isn't business as usual. People's needs then make them easy prey for dictators. Money WOULD help if we made sure it got into the right hands.

That is only a short term solution. If you want to help bring about actual change, then get politically active and work for an end to current 'aid' practices. Those 'aid packages' that U.S. and UK governments are so proud of come with conditions that require the recipient countries to open their economies, labour and resources to exploitation by western corporations. Things like containing the local water supply and selling it to the people who live there. Or preventing legislation that would protect local industries while they caught up with the more established ones elsewhere.

U.S. aid is all about keeping African and South/Central American countries impoverished and subservient. Nothing is going to change until we get rid of these.

(And how it got that bad in the first place, a few hundred years of European colonial rape and pillage did that.)

By all means, give money -- but educate yourself and those around you. And vote!

I have to agree with many here you gave you an answer.. However Christmas used to be fun at one time in my life.. Today it is a form of greed... Spending money on others can only work if you have enough money for yourself and your family..

I agree with one of the other writers.. If you really need to part with your money this Holiday Season.. Give it to a family in your town who could really use it..

Today's Santa is nothing but a thief.. He robs poor people's money to spend at a shopping center.. Some people have to pay the credit cards off later.. And that could take months or years..

People kill themselves during this Holiday as they think no one loves them.. Crime goes up during this holiday.. there are people out there who don't have the money to buy Christmas presents so they rob a gas station or a bank just to buy presents for their kids or wife..

So you see Christmas is not the same as it once was.. Today it is not what it was long ago.. It's time to get Christmas back on track on what it was in the 1800's

After all.. It's Jesus's birthday.. Not a cash cow for shopping centers.. Nuff Said..

I think a good idea would be donating goods to Africa to stop AIDS. Some things to donate would be canned goods, money, and even toiletries. They will use everything that they get down there. Even donating robes or slippers or even pajamas to the hospitals down there would be a privilege. Even your idea sounds good, like donating to the poor. They have so many problems in Africa now ANYTHING would be appreciated.

Stop Africa's poor doing what, exactly? Sorry, couldn't resist that one.

I doubt it would be awsome. Africa has had billions of pounds pumped in to it, and seems no better off. Perhaps aid is not the answer. I have no idea what is, but it isn't handouts.

What about the poor in the United States. Why don't we give them a helping hand all year round? There are alot of homeless people here in the States. Why not help out our own people?

I like the idea of helping Americans in need before helping people in Africa. However, even if we send food, money, clothes over to Africa, the governments are so corrupt that it's doubtful the goods we sent would make it to the people who need it.

i think we should stop trying to help the rest of the world and concentrate on sorted out our own countries problems because personally i think we have some major issues going on right here in the u.k. where are the billions raised by all these different charitys for other countries going ? maybe the best thing for third world countries would be birth control?

No way. Africans are poor because they aren't capable of building or maintaining and industrialized society or the necessary infrastructure that goes along with that. Throwing money at the problem is just making it worse as they will just overbreed instead of solving their problems. Its like putting a medicated band-aid over a gunshot wound.
