I live in a warm sunny climate, and have always loved VW Cabriolets. I finally decided to buy one, but everyone says it's a chicks car. I don't really want guys hitting on me at stop lights if I am driving around in this car.

What should I do? Maybe get a bumper sticker that says "Mustache Rides Free" or something?

Don't regret buying it. I'm gonna get a second-hand mini minor soon and I don't care what my family or friends think about my decision cos I've always wanted a "Herbie-like" car. If guys do hit on you at stop lights, just give them a nod and drive on... these things happen.

Some cars most people consider feminine or macho. Beetle, Cooper, Miata = feminine. Humvee, Corvette, Viper = macho. Heck, anyone who thinks all Harleys are macho are even wrong: most bikers call Sportsers 'girl bikes', since many women have them now because they are light, while the guys have the Softails, Dressers & bigger bikes. It's all so silly, really. Some guy I know makes a quick initial asessment of potential women to date based on what they drive, and says he is pretty accurate. In our mobile society, we can't help but make quick judgement calls about someone by what they drive: Minivan = soccer mom. Big SUV = soccer dad. Convertible = college student or midlife crisis. Fancy European sedan = sucessful businessman. Too easy! And probably accurate 70% of the time.

I have actually heard this. I was dating a guy who laughed at guys who drove Cabriolet's and said they were gay. I thought it was kind of funny because he drove a VW (I think it was a Jetta?) and it looked just like a Cabriolet but it wasn't a convertible. So my advise is drive what you want and don't worry about what other people think.

Another convertible model won't scream Chick Car so consider some alternatives. Otherwise, if you go with the Cabby, just be sure not to act gay or dress gay while you're driving around in it. No pink shirts or cuff links. Don't highlight your hair, either. And you could always install a gun rack. Nothing says "Bubba" like a gun rack!

Yes they will. If you have a girlfriend you can claim it is her car, if you need to pick up chicks then you may need a different tactic. Perhaps a bumper sticker that says "My other car is a truck" or something like that.

MBA: The bottom line is this. If YOU like it, you drive it how and wherever, you want. It's your personal taste ... so go for it! Never feel that you have to ever, justify yourself to anyone for the way you dress, think or the auto you drive! Diversity is the catalyst that makes North America hum! Good luck to ya, MBA !!!

Ok, the rednecks in the 4x4 trucks will probably think you're gay. Others might think your an intelligent jock of some sort (cyclist) but really does it matter? You could always get those mudflaps that truckers have - you know with the silver sillouette of a girl...

I think the sticker idea is about the only way to look straight to everyone exept for maybe some guns painted on the hood or naked girl mud flaps

Yes, just saying the word "cabriolet" is gay. Sounds too flamboyant.

Yes, Yes they will assume you are gay if you buy this car. But as long as you like the car, I say go for it!
