It's a look into the possible future, a commentary on the degradation that society is going through. As it is right now, in the future people will be indifferent to war, selfishly living their lives and filling them with short-term instant gratifications. People become more and more shallow, no longer caring about the liberal arts and instead concentrating on "skills" that they need to know only to survive. They burn books because books represent ideas, thinking, coming to conclusions and problems solving, things the government wouldn't want the masses to do because when they'r emindless drones it's much easier to control and manipulate them. No one pays attention to the war because no one any longer feels attachments to other people. They've become indifferent to everything. That's why so many people "accidentally" take too many sleeping pills. They don't realize just how empty their lives are because they don't know how to analyze what's wrong with themselves.

It's a commentary on the state of society and how we've allowed ourselves to become distracted by shallow entertainment. People forgot that you have to know the past to learn from it, and that knowledge is power.
