First of all, my condolences on the loss of your pet!

Secondly, you may never know exactly what killed your rabbit unless you take his body to a vet for a necropsy (which is what they call an autopsy for animals). You mention that your rabbit felt "bloady." Do you mean bloated? If that's the case, it seems quite likely that your rabbit may have had an intestinal blockage or some other digestive problem. Rabbits have pretty sensitive digestive systems. They can ingest a lot of hair while grooming themselves, but unlike cats, they can't cough up hairballs, so the hair can just stay in their gut. If a hair ball gets big enough, it can block up the rabbit's digestive system. The best way to prevent this is to make sure your rabbit gets lots of fiber in his diet, including lots and lots of hay, which can help push the hair out of the digestive system. Rabbits also can't digest non-fructose sugars and starches as well as we people can. If a rabbit eats a lot of starchy things like corn, potatoes or sugary human treats like cookies, it can make for a lot of gas in the rabbit's belly. And unlike people, to put it bluntly, rabbits can't really burp or pass gas very well to get rid of this extra gas, so this can make bunnies quite sick, too. Then again, I volunteer with rabbits at my local animal shelter, and some rabbits just get bloated and sick for no real reason that we can ever figure out. Some things are just a mystery. However, rabbits' health can decline quickly once they start showing signs of being sick, so we always recommend you take your rabbit to the vet immediately if you notice anything like bloat or if your bunny stops eating like normal for more than half a day or so.

There's a lot of good rabbit health information on the House Rabbit Society website.

Your rabbit died from what is likely the most common killer of pet rabbits... gastrointestinal stasis. He likely either wasn't getting enough fiber or wasn't drinking enough water, and he developed a blockage in his gut. He may also have gotten frightened, and the stress stopped his gut from moving.

Rabbits guts must constantly be taking food in and pushing it out. What you felt as bloating was everything else he'd eaten since the blockage occurred that had nowhere to go. Stasis can kill a rabbit as quickly as within 12 hours, and rabbits hide the symptoms very well because they are prey animals and don't dare show that they're having problems. If you can catch it in time, there are steps you can take to fix the problem, but it isn't easy, and it isn't always successful.

Please don't beat yourself up about it. Without previous experience or a really, really good rabbit-savvy vet to intervene, there was no way to save your pet.

As VHD is highly infectious it is virtually guaranteed that any other rabbits that you get will contract it from the surroundings - even if you burn the old accommodation and buy new. It would be pretty pointless getting new bunnies as you will just be killing them. Please tell your sister this for the rabbits' sake as well as yours. I am so sorry that you lost your pets, and I am sorry that you are feeling so sad.

I so sorry that your bunny died it can be so heart breaking. Was your bunny old some time they just get so that they can go to the bathroom any more due to a lack of something in there diet and they just pass away. It was not anything that you did. They have very delicate tummy's and he just couldn't get over it. You know bunnies are just like people sometime they just pass away for really no reason at all. But I bet he or she is just hopping around happy in bunny heaven....

I'm very sorry to hear about you rabbit. It's horrible when a pet dies. I'm sure it wasn't your fault. Rabbits do die suddenly and for no apparent reason however much care you take with them.

Sometimes animals die without any expected reason. The reason why he might have felt hard was b/c the body was dead for over 12 hours and was going through rigor mortis.

Rigor mortis is one of the recognisable signs of death (Latin "mors, mortis") that is caused by a chemical change in the muscles after death, causing the limbs of the corpse to become stiff (Latin "rigor") and difficult to move or manipulate.

Sometimes loud noises can kill animals. I had a hamster that died because I used to play guitar in my room. (Acoustic). It may not seem loud to you, but it does to them. Smaller animals have very sensitive hearing.

I am very sorry for your loss.

If he was bloated he might have eaten too much or maybe drank too much water, or he may have eaten something that didn't sit well in his stomach. Another possiblity is that he was sick. Sorry for your loss. =[
