Ok i am in Middle school and i am in 8th grade and the school did a play today and it was about teen pregnancy a 16 year old girl got pregnant and the 18 year old boy who was the father suggested abortion. The play ended with the abortion. Is that right to show it to 6th,7th, and 8th grade kids without the parent consent. I mean it might be against people beleifs to hear about that stuff. And the principal is saying that they are in charge and they can do what they want. Are they aloud to do that?

Thats not right. I would be very upset if that was a play at my kids school. Im not sure if they legally are or arent allowed to do that but ethically it was wrong. I would see what your parents think. If you were my daughter and it upset you I would do my best as a parent to make sure that the play was never put on again. Enough parents complain (or even contact a local news station) Im sure the pressure will make the principal rethink what he said earlier.

Like others have already pointed out, schools are required to give out papers for parents to sign just so a person can go through sex ed. If I remember correctly, even PG13 movies need parental consent to be viewed in school unless at an adult alternative program.

The fact that this school has shown a play that involves (and supports) such a controversial issue as abortion is ethically wrong. However, as far as I know, they are allowed to do this. Plays such as Babylon (about the 'good touch, bad touch') are allowed to be shown without parental consent, though some (if not most) school refuse to show them because they know parents will complain.

I am against abortion and find this to be very disheartening that it is being promoted in schools as a method of birth control, as that is what it sounds like. If I were there or a parent of a student there, I would most definitely start a fuss about the viewing of this material.

No, it's not right. Even though abortion is legal, a large portion of the American public still feels it is not right, therefore the public schools (which exist to serve American families) should be sensitive to that fact and let parents talk to their children and teach them about this moral issue.

The school might argue the issue was merely presented as part of a drama and not in the classroom but that is irrelevant. Anything that goes on at the school is the schools responsibility AND is considered part of a teen's education. Sensitive moral and political issues should be avoided altogether.

Just stick to reading, writing and arithmetic!

If you feel very strongly that the rights of students and parents were ignored I encourage you to talk to the principal or even the school board. Here is a chance for you to further YOUR education by learning how to be an involved and active citizen.

And remember, you can "vote" with your presence (or lack thereof) when anything goes on at school that you feel is offensive.

It depends on whether it is a public or private school and what not. I don't think it's right either way though. Abortion is very controversial and I know I would be upset by the biased ending of the play. You should talk to someone about. Political stuff like that should be left out of the school systems. It's up to the parents to guide their children's political opinions.

Now this just completely shocked me! When I was in 6th grade we had to have our parent's sign a note just so we could go to sex ed class. And in High School we had to have our parent's sign a permission slip just to watch an R rated movie! If they showed a play like this to my daughter she wouldn't be going to that school any more that's for sure! I don't believe in abortion and I sure as hell don't want someone telling her it's OKAY!

As a parent I would be terribly upset about not being informed about the paly and that they ddin't ask for my written consent for my child to watch this play. The school may be incharge of teaching my child, however, they are not responsible to show my child plays, movies, etc that I wouldn't want my child watching in the first place without my approval and attendence.

Middle school children are children, they shouldn't even know that an abortion is an option. They should just be starting to learn about sex ed. As a child I would be confused, as an adult I am upset that this happened. I would definetly speak to my parents so they could speak to the school.

Sadly they can show things like that without parent consent, but I would like to know if my child was going to be watching that!
I don't believe in abortion, if you can't take care of the child, there are so so so many couples that can't get pregnant that will adopt the baby.....

As a parent, I think I would be upset to hear that abortion was being promoted to my child as acceptable birth control.
