Because he's black, considered attractive, gives a feel good speech..and most importantly, hasn't said or done anything that people can pin him down on.
Like Seinfeld, it's a show about nothing.

Charisma. Who knows really why people vote as they do. He is a smart guy. My concern is lack of experience. The White House should never be an on the job training site though lately that's what is seems to have become. I think people are looking always for something new. Maybe that's it. Merry Christmas

In my opinion he has injected some new energy into the party. His age for one, & his diverse background are definately a draw for younger, disefranchised voters. After all, the Kennedy brothers were young & politically inexperienced when they ran for various offices.

Could it be his sensitivity about his big ears? He told Maureen Dowd (NYT) "I'm putting you on notice...I've been sensitive about my big ears since I was a little boy." Not an exact quote, but close enough.
