It's traditionally done because on Christmas day was the day the 3 wise men went to baby Jesus and presented him with gifts. So that is why on Christmas day, presents are given out. It's a celebration of sharing and receiving just like the wise men did in the manger.

Actually, The Christmas we celebrate is not in the true teachings of Jesus.

Luke 14: 12 -14 says:

12. Then Jesus said to His host, "When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers, or relatives, or your neighbors. If you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid.

13. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind,

14.and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the Righteous.

Exchanging gifts is done within your equal social class - mostly.
No one really increased in their true faith through the myriads of Christmases we celebrated during our lifetime. In fact, they become complacent by thinking that their celebrating Christ's birth by merrymaking itself assures them of Heaven.

Your Question of the Ultimate Gift is only true for people who
Receives Christ with all Obedience of His Commission given to all followers who truly has the Holy Spirit in them which enables them to accomplish them. That is why the Bible said
" But he who stands firm in the end will be saved ".

Seek ye the Lord while He may be found".

Gifts are a way to honor each other. Jesus called us to love and respect all people, and gifts is one way to do this. However, it's unreasonable to expect anyone to give gifts to the entire world's population, so we focus on our loved ones and those around us.

As long as we do not lose the proper perspective--that Jesus Christ died for our sins and Christmas/Advent is the season to be joyful of his arrival--then buying gifts for each other is a wonderful thing.

Because people have become materialiitic and they "need" or really want something then their parents don't want to break their hearts then they become spoiled little brats then when they grow up being spoiled doesn't look so good because they became stupid with just saying how cool somthing is and they turn out to be poor and have an awful job.

Smart and none spoiled kids will rule the earth while dumb spoiled kids wondered why they could never do better.

this is a total guess: im thinking that we recieve gifts from christmas as a symbol of the gifts jesus recieved at birth, the gift mary recieved from god...idk, thats what i think. of course not everyone is going to agree and christmas has become very comercialized and lost its true meaning to many people. i fall guilty of that...i mean, i think little kids learn about santa claus before they learn about it being the birth of christ (which really isnt the correct date)

we don't :need: gifts. Gifts can be a way to show how we love one another. Gifts can give us the excuse to spoil a special someone. Yes, we have the best gift already.

I'm not to sure... but it has somehow become this bizarre tradition... as I doubt there was such a thing as Christmas trees and tree lights back in the time it all began (but Christ wasn't born in December either... so everything seems a little off anyways) but the only thing we can do now a days is roll with the punches... or do the all American favorite past time... find someone to sue for it.

I think it's just become such a part of society that if we all stopped giving gifts for christmas, people wouldn't know what to do. The true meaning of christmas has been lost for decades now....

I believe we give gifts to our love ones to remind them we love them. God gave us Jesus to remind us that he loves us. So give a gift with love and from the heart. Also, maybe its symbolic to the gifts the wisemen brought to baby Jesus when he was born, it is his birthday and we do give gifts on birthdays. Merry Christmas and God bless you!!
