I diorama is a three dimensional depiction of something. Think of a shoebox on its side as a window. You might want to do a diorama of a desert. On the back of the box and the sides you would picture the horizon and sand as well as some mountains, geological formations and cactus. You would then possibly glue sand to the bottom of the inside of the box, and you would set up free standing cactus, tumbleweed, desert animals etc on the ground.
