Basketball pays more for almost all players for several reasons. First, and foremost, is there are FAR fewer players on a team so, since the three big professional sports pay their entire teams on average roughly the same, there is simply a lot more for each player in basketball.
Secondly, basketball contracts are guaranteed beginning to end. If you sign up with the Spurs for 6 years at $14 million a year, you will get $84 million even if you are picking up cans in the 7-11 lot for a day to day job toward the end of that 6 years. Football contracts are not guaranteed so if you begin to play less well than you are being paid, the cut you and you get nothing more. Only the bonus money you hear about is actually guaranteed and lots of that actually depends on them keeping you year to year. So only the initial bonus is truly guaranteed.
Thirdly, baseball is the easiest on your body, but pays less well on average. Basketball is next. Football shouldn't even be mentioned because it BRUTALIZES you. The average NFL career is 3-4 years (so if you take out all the guys you hear about forever, those guys left last even less time) and literally takes 10-20 years off your LIFE, not just your playing career (NFL study).
That hits the highest points. I might mention Reggie Jackson (baseball Hall of Famer) told Bo Jackson (before he blew out his hip playing football) he was crazy — Reggie made the point he made better money than NFL players ever did then and had a 20 year career he WALKED away from, not one he hobbled away in pain from.
That all said, if you are realistically a minor talent, not a major one, you have to factor in the idea that NFL teams have 4 times as many players so maybe you'd have a better chance at niching in somewhere. At less money, but you don't get any basketball money if you don't make a team.
Finally, remember Magic Johnson? He was starting a 3 year contract at $16-17 million a year when he retired due to HIV. He got every penny of that $50 million. He also made a comeback during the third year of that contract but with a new, full value contract for that year in addition to the original contract's third year!!! Basketball team owners are literally insane!

I think it sort of depends where you live. If you live in a football-dominated state like Texas, Oklahoma, or Florida (where I do), you're less likely to get attention as a basketball player and more likely to get some local headlines playing football. Keep in mind, however, that if you do live in a 'Football-is-King' place like this then a lot more people will be trying out, and the coaching and competition will be pretty serious. College-wise, it is probably easier to get into college if you're a football player if you play a defensive position or are an offensive lineman. Overall, I think it's easier to get a basketball scholarship, because even mid-major schools get attention and have a chance of getting into The Tournament. Plus, if you do play football on a sholarship, you have to play at college for 3 years before you can enter the draft and make money.

You make more in Football because the playing time of the players is shorter than Basketball. It is not as physically demanding as Football.
I think I would go with the one that I was the best playing and had a better chance in getting one of those big salaries.

I think it depends on the players...there are athletes that get paid millions of dollars in both sports...and the better you are at your sport...the more you get paid...choose the one you llike best and want to do for a LONG time and make sure you are the best at it. Hope this helps!
