I live an hour away from my hospital, this is my first pregnancy and everyone has told me I'll have plenty of time to get there. I lost my plug two days ago and am 70% effaced and not dilated as of two days ago as well. I'm extremely nervous that I'll end up having my baby on the road. Do you guys think that's a possibility? I'm definitely going to leave earlier than the standard five mins apart rule...

you will have a ton of time especially if this is your first, if you get to the hospital before your contractions are five minutes apart, they may send you home. At least that is what they did to me. I was even 4 minutes apart and they still sent me home because i was progressing slowly.......

Share your concerns with you doctor. But I can tell you that if you wait until the five minutes apart I think you and your driver may have a hard time getting there. I only had a 20 minute drive to the hospital and we left at the five minutes apart I was so uncomfortable in the car. The contraction seemed to never go away. I just kept squeezing my husbands hand as we drove down the highway. Most likely not a very safe way to drive when you have someone inflicting pain on you. Good luck with your new baby

I would leave earlier than the standard 5 minutes apart rule, but you may cuss me for telling you that once you get there and realize hours later after you are there that you had plenty of time! :-) All women are different, though, so better safe than sorry. But, I have never heard of a woman having their first baby and having it before 7 hours, but I am sure there are some women out there.

Good luck!

I lived about one and a half hours from the hospital. I was worried too, but my doctor assured me it was fine. I ended up being induced, so I didn't have to worry anyways, but I highly doubt you'll have the baby on the road. My doctor did give me some procautions and some advice, for example make sure you have a cell of car phone with you (barrow if needed) so that if labor progresses too far you can pull over and call 911. Most women's first labor is upwards of 12 hours. You will be just fine!!! I wouldn't be suprised if you were induced. Good Luck and don't worry!!

Ok..this is gonna make some people mad..but I don't care...Just because it's your first..does NOT mean you have lots of time...with my first...I had no contractions or anything...my water just broke out of nowhere...(two weeks early by the way) then about 30 minutes after that I started having contractions...and about 3 hours later- I had my baby...so not ALL first births are forever long...So I would say- don't wait for the 5 minutes apart thing...if they get mad and try to send you home...tell them to stick it cause you live an hour away and are not having this baby on the side of the road! You may also- want to talk to your doctor...maybe because of your situation he will induce you or something...

When you go into labour and start having contractions you will have plenty of time to get to the hospital. With my first daughter I had a 18 hour labour, the hospital staff told me I had plenty of time and didn't need to go to hospital yet, but I went. You do whatever you feel comfortable doing. Be prepared for a long wait and a boring time at hospital but at lease you will be more relaxed and can have one worry off your mind. It is stressful enough as your never quite sure whats happening and how slow or quick things will happen so when you want to go you go. Good luck xx

i just delivered three weeks ago and i was extremely worried about this as well. it was not my first child so what i had planned was to leave as soon as my contractions were more than four in one hour which is what my dr suggested. but my water broke and we had to make one of those mad dash trips. we still made it though.

since it is your first pregnancy i really believe that you will have plenty of time to get there. i definetly think you should leave earlier than five minutes apart though. my first pregnancy labor lasted 10 hours, my second lasted 8 hours, and my third and most recent lasted only 3 but it had to be an emergency c section due to her being in the breech position.

good luck and don't worry everything will turn out just fine!

At the 5 minutes apart, they say it can be as much as 12 hours of labor from that point. I wouldn't waste any time getting to the hospital at that time... and I don't blame you for leaving earlier than that. Definitely call your Dr. and tell them you're coming early. But I think you'll have plenty of time getting there.

Good Luck!

You should wait. They will send you home if your not ready. They sent me home 3 times before they kept me. Wait till your contractions are close together and last longer then 30 seconds. Don't hesitate to call the OB @ the hospital if you have ANY questions at all! Good luck to you. Everything will be just fine and you will not have your baby on the road!

you should go at the first sign of a contraction. my mom almost had me on the road. she made it though. this is your first time so it should take you a while to have the baby. don't worry. i would just make sure the car had a tank full of gas your bags are packed and your shoes are by the door so when the time comes you can leave as fast as you can. good luck and im sure that you and baby will have plenty of time to get there.
