I agree that x-mas has now become much too commercialised, with shops and toy/card/food/drink etc manufacturers using it as an excuse to make even more money.
Adverts for christams now hit us straight after halloween.
I now just buy presents for family and close friends as it is getting out of control. I'm not a scrooge but buying presents for relatives i only see once a year maximum is ridiculous and takes away the true meaning of christmas...
I don't think that we should only celebrate christmas every other year, but that if you don't agree with how commercial x-mas time has now become don't let it suck you in so much, and just buy presents and spend time with people who actually mean something to you.

Yes!! I can't stand it!! I'm not a Christian and I resent the fact that I am obliged to take part in a religious festival when I don't believe in any mainstream religion, fair play to Christians, but I don't understand why everybody else is expected to participate!! I'd love to just ignore it, I HATE capitalism with a vengeance and resent the obligation to spend money I can't afford - and when I try to explain to my family that I don't want to celebrate it they won't have it. To me, its just a big capitalist venture which exploits people at the most depressing time of year, - pagans celebrate the 25th Dec as the winter solstice, when the sun starts regaining its strength - hence the birth of the 'sun' not 'son'. Now that makes plenty sense to me, but the modern tradition of getting into debt for no good reason is ridiculous!
The true meaning has been twisted and manipulated into a profit making scheme for capitalist pigs!
Ok, ok.... rant over!
Crispy - many muslims do celebrate xmas - they believe in jesus as a prophet

You could buy 'alternative presents' from such as Salvation Army, Tearfund, 0xfam. Your friends get a gift card. Someone who is in real need gets a gift (from around £2 to £3000 plus. You will feel you have done something worthwhile...and you will have kicked some, at least, of the commercialism of Christmas out of the widow.
The gifts can be water, school books, goats, etc, etc.

Yeah it has became a bit over commercialised with people now feeling obliged to buy presents for everyone even if they don't want to, can't afford to. This year I'm in NZ away from everyone which makes it very cheap. Only have to buy for my girlfriend and a couple of people we are staying with. Still I miss my family and their drunken ways.

It has nothing in common with Christmas for me personally.
I like this commerce season like a season of permitted pleasant jokes, e.g. crazy deers in supermarkets, and these jokes are much better than these of Halloween. But plastic Christmas trees are really not good decorations for home and Christmas spirit.

No i disagree about the every other year thing, But i do agree that it seems to be in your face from about late August!!
The thing to do is too make a statement to ALL your family saying dont bother getting me anything spend it on yourselves as you are no longer in to this Christmas bollox!!

I loathe it.
The only person getting a present from me this year is my grandson (and I've bought his on line). I'll give my kids some money.
All my food will be delivered by Tesco.
So no shopping for me.
If it wasn't for the kids bleating at me I'd ignore the whole bloody nonsensical thing.

i can see what your saying. what i think is worse is how they want to call it the holiday tree instead of what it is which is the christmas tree. so if its ok to do that then why not call menoorrahs holiday candles or the muslim star and crescent the holiday star and crescent. but the best thing to do is just keep on supporting in it and do it to your hearts content. and dont give into the man.
