do bamboo plants grow better in the water containers they come in or in soil. I bought a small bamboo plant (stick) and was wondering.

Depends on the variety of bamboo. I have several types and each has done better for me after being planting in rich organic soil. They are on a covered patio, get filtered sun and are in large containers.

Yes, I agree with daylily. In addition, please take note that bamboo needs a humid condition and proper light. To ensure proper watering, soak the pot in a bucket of water until the bubbles disappear. Also check for mealy bugs. To try to save a dying potted bamboo, first moisten the potting medium, then apply the plastic tent method by putting the entire pot and the plant in a large plastic bag, preferably transparent, and then close the opening of the bag tightly. This will ensure high humidity. Open the bag every 5 to 7 days to replace the air and to check soil moisture. Keep in a shaded area and hope that the plant will produce new leaves.

I received on as a gift several years ago. I keep it in a glass jar with marbles to hold the bamboo in place and just replace the water on a regular basis. It has gone from a small shoot to about three feet tall!

Good luck with your plant!
