What you can do is start using a basecoat and a topcoat. Don't file the surface of your nails, that's weird and not good for them.

I too have thin, bendy nails and my nailpolish used to chip off easily. I have found that if I apply a basecoat, a couple layers of nailpolish, and then a topcoat the color stays on fine. OPI Nail Envy is the best product I've ever tried, and I have tried many. It's a little more expensive than your average walmart nail treatment, but the stuff is great. It makes my nails feel much stronger when I wear it and keeps my nailpolish on for awhile when I use it as a topcoat. I'll even put two coats of the stuff on my nails when I'm not wearing any nailpolish to make them shiny and unbendable.

Basecoat, the start by putting polish on your tips first, then the whole nail, repeat, and then add a topcoat.

Make sure you let them completely set and dry well.

You can avoid chipping by making sure the nail is completely free of oils before applying your base coat. A top coat is also essential to give your manicure a longer life. Apply a second coat the next day, and then every second day after on your fingernails, and every week on your toenails.

If you clean your nails with nail polish remover before you paint your nails, then paint your nails, and then put a clear coat over that, then the nail polish stays on longer. But it would probably stay on a long time if you didn't put the clear coat over it, I don't think it really matters.

Go to the store, and see if they have something called "Hard as nails", get that along with any clear nail "enamel". First, put on the hard as nails, then your color, then the enamel. Hope it helps!
