We have a bet going in our office.... I say that a Cow can out run a man. I'm referring to a cow (Dairy) not a Bull. Help me out with some answers and how you came to your conclusion. Cheers!

Humans can run far faster than 12 mph. During a sprint, I believe it is somewhere around 23mph. (200 meters in about 19.5 seconds (world record) = about 23 miles per hour.)

This was over a one mile course. The winner finished in 8:54.4 which should give her an average speed of 5.55 mph (I think). This was a whole mile run though. From my own experience, cows are a lot faster than that when they are sprinting... I could never catch up to them in the barnyard!

If a cow is falling, it can go very fast.

A very strange true story:
Earlier this year, the dazed crew of a Japanese trawler were plucked of the Sea of Japan clinging to the wreckage of their sunken ship. Their rescue, however, was followed by immediate imprisonment once authorities questioned the sailors on their ship's loss. To a man they claimed that a cow, falling out of a clear blue sky, had struck the trawler amidships, shattering its hull and sinking the vessel within minutes.

They remained in prison for several weeks, until the Russian Air Force reluctantly informed Japanese authorities that the crew of one of its cargo planes had apparently stolen a cow wandering at the edge of a Siberian airfield, forced the cow into the plane's hold and hastily taken off for home. Unprepared for live cargo, the Russian crew was ill-equipped to manage a now rampaging cow within its hold. To save the aircraft and themselves, they shoved the animal out of the cargo hold as they crossed the Sea of Japan at an altitude of 30,000 feet.

I have worked on a ranch and the cow can be faster. I think if they got really wound up they could reach 30 mph. I know you can not out run one.

The world record for the fastest RACE HORSE is 43.97 mph and cows are much slower than that. I've worked with cows my entire life and have never clocked one but they do not run anywhere near 30 mph. Based on rounding them up with a RZR I'd say top speed is around 15-20 mph. I say that because I can outrun any cow in low gear and that will only get up to around 20mph.

I'd say the cow would be faster if it were running at its top speed.

Cows are faster. You'd think that because they are much bigger that they wouldn't be able to move so quickly, but dang they are some fast little bugger.
