That'd depend on wether you personally approve of more federal or state control over such things, and naturally wether you trusted your state or federal government itself.

Theres an old Russian joke that may apply here:

"Whats the best form of government?"
"A good king!"
"Whats the worst form of government?"
"A bad king!"

I think you get the idea. IMHO, considering the amount of abuse and potential fraud that can become entangled in social programs, I'd rather have the chance to have a large governmental oversight report generated for the nation to view, rather than having the potential for secret abuse occuring on the state level.

But that assumes I trust my federal OR my state government officals to report on such things. :) I think having good 3rd party non-affiliated reports from the media or simply concerned individuals investigating such thing is the duty of every citizen, and would balance the chances for fraud or susceptability for abuse out with individual oversight.

So in short? No, I don't think the government has gotten too involved, but I do feel that the citizens have often fall lax in their duty to ensure that both state and federal institutions are actually DOING their jobs properly.

Zurvan don't listen to these narrow minded brainwash fools! Our current capitalistic does not work for the majority of Americans! As we are living in a world of false financing, Hi debt, low to no real savings & mortgages that are to high for people's incomes etc. We have to find a way to level the playing field or get money into the hands of the people who need it the most not the ones who already have more than they need! I am for rule & control by the legal majority start with over Money/Power/Wealth also bust up or end the corrupt representative government keeping the commoners in check! By the way government is now involve for Congress holds the controls to Money/Power/Wealth just they only doing business with the minority mob wealthy ruling class and saying to hell with the majority commoners etc.

Well, social programs are good for the disabled, and mentally ill, but I believe if people are capable use any means necessary to have people work a job because it helps with self worth? Its a political question where the moral questions says, "The reason people are poor is because their lazy?" My response, yes for some I agree, but try working full-time job when your mind is impaired, and body can barely, feed, bathe, and care for yourself. I don't dispute economists opinions that welfare drives the incentive not to work, but sometimes certain people are not physically able to work, or people go down on luck need help to get back on their feet.
The government should help those that fall on hard times, but not let the people before lifers on government benefits if capable of working fulltime because that is not fair to the people who work, and pay taxes for it. In all, its balancing compassion for the downtrodden with the realism that we cant have everybody dependent on the government.

Its question where a opinion is more based on stereotypes more than truth at times, and 90% of the people on government social programs do not wish to be on them because of guilt being a freeloader, but in actually its better than throwing people to the curb.

Still, people that abuse government social programs should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, and encourage work over welfare at any avenue for people capable of working.

Ironically, with post-9/11 politics and NCLB, the government under republican stewardship is bigger than ever. As a republican, I have been very disappointed by the lavish spending by republicans, which has increased our national debt.

I'm hoping democrats will be more responsible. The federal government should either be reducing spending to end deficit spending **and** paying down the debt every year; or, it should raise taxes to cover expenses **and** pay down the debt.

As consumers, we're told to manage debt better, but congress does not set a good example.
