Mind Puzzler:

You have been locked in a small room, with diminishing oxygen. your captor has taken everything from you except your clothes. there are no windows and only one exit through a tightly sealed steal door. the door can not be opened manually. the only objects in the room besides you are two pieces of rope, a lighter, and a clue that will help you escape. the clue is something like this:

The two pieces of rope each burn for 60 minutes, but all parts of the rope do not burn at consistent rates. next to the door you should notice on small button. if you push that button once and then again exactly 45 minutes later, the door will open. you must figure out how to time the 45 mintues using the ropes and lighter. if you don't get it right, you will be trapped in that room when the oxygen runs out. good luck

How you can use the ropes to time your escape?

but remember you have to use the ropes and pushing the button has to be exactly 45 mintues later!!!

Okay...

Push the button. Take one rope, fold it in half so that both ends are together. Light both those ends and one end from the other rope at the same time.

When the rope that has both ends burning is consumed (half of 60 minutes, or 30 minutes later), light the other end of the other rope. When it's consumed (since it was already half of sixty minutes (30 minutes), half of that'll be 15 minutes), press the button again.

Light the first rope. Fold the 2nd rope in half and then in half again...so that it is in four sections. Let go holding the rope so that 3/4 of the rope hang on one side and 1/4 to the other. Push the button and light the 2nd rope. When the rope burns to the fold, it will have been 45 minutes. Push the button again.

I think you would have to figure out 3/4 of the rope, stand by the button, set the rope on fire and when 3/4 of the rope has burned, push the button immediately. You know this is just a guess.

It has become very trendy to avoid the word "problem," because it seems negative (to some--to others it just seems accurate), so that all "problems" become "challenges." But sometimes there is no better way than to admit you have a problem. For instance, think about whether any of the offered expressions really is as good as the old standby, "Houston, we have a problem:" Houston, we have a difficulty Houston, we have some trouble Houston, we have some worries, Houston, we have a complication. Houston, we have a difficult situation. Houston, we have a snag. Houston, we have a hitch. Houston, we have a drawback. Houston, we have a predicament. Houston, we have a thorn in our side. Houston, we have a pain in the neck. Houston, we have a setback Houston, we have a conundrum. Houston, we have a challenge. Houston, we have an issue. Houston, we have a botheration. Etc. You see? Sometimes it's just better to say you have a problem and be done with it.
