Just put a note on the invitation. My friend's shower had a note put in with the invitation asking guests to "bring an unwrapped book if you'd like to help get mom and dad ready for lots of reading time with baby". At the shower they put a nice basket out where the books were put. It was fun to look through what everyone brought, and some people put little notes inside the book to my friend, herhusband, and the baby.
Very cute I thought.........and why not give a suggestion!! I really like it when people set up registries and give suggestions. If I'm going to spend my money on getting them something, I want it to be something they will enjoy!!!

For my baby shower, I believe the invitations had something along the lines as bring your favorite book instead of a card.

You can only make a suggestion but I would put it in the intivation.
The mother to be would like to encourage you to buy the baby a book in place of a card. Thank you!
Just like asking not the have flowers sent to a funeral, suggesting a donation to a charity.
That sound great I love having lots of books for my son. This sounds like a great way to get some.

I think the best thing is to be honest with everyone. I would say to them ' thankyou for wanting to come to my baby shower but rather then you waste your money on cards i was wondering if there was any chance you could get me books instead as they would be more usfull. Thankyou and i hope you dont think i am being ungratful'

Just make it a themed baby shower say something in your invitations like we having a book themed baby shower! bring your favorite books for baby or something along those lines i dont think its rude to tactfully make suggestions I let people know where im registered what is a registery but telling people what you want?

We did this! "Please express your congratulations to Baby with a signed reading book in place of a greeting card. Registered at the following: Target, Wal-Mart, Babies-R-Us" - that way they'd know where we are registered at as well. I was SO happy the amount of people-pretty much EVERYONE got us a nice book and put a note inside with some meaning :) We read books and books and books- and my son loves it sooooo much!
Goodluck! Don't feel afraid to ask!

I have an idea:)
I would make your invites folded card type... made on a computer to resemble a book cover and title it something like "The Story of us: celebrate the expansion chapter!" and when you open it, list its a "book shower" or something to that sort... to help "baby ___'s" library grow.
hope it helps! i kind of think thats a neat idea, books!

I am personally one of those people who doesn't see how it is appropriate to tell people what you want as a gift. You should be grateful for what they give you, not obsessed over what you "want".
