Because of the drought you may find that many of the birds have moved on to other areas. I'm in inland NSW and I've got birds from outlying areas in my garden I have never seen before.

Also its a bit early for fruit yet the birds usually like to wait till mine is ripe before they start although the rosellas are already tasting the pears.

That Ecoli sounds nasty, they must be using recycled water etc have never heard of such a thing in Australia.

Hi ,I have fruit trees in my yard.Every year black birds come and take a peck out of my pears.I think you may have a problem with your fruit trees .The birds may be tasting or sensing some thing wrong with them.In the U.S.A. there have been out breaks of ecoli in produce lately.I am not saying you have it, but I would look into your fruit.I hope I am wrong about this and maybe the birds were filled up else where before stopping at your place.Good Luck

Has it not ripened yet? That would be the main reason why I can think of. Another reason would be because it was a poor crop due to weather circumstances, and perhaps it's not tasty too them as a result.
