I won a photo contest, and have the copyright photo and I was told that if it was published (which it is) I could collect money on it, am I right ?

Yes, you can make money off it, unless by entering it in the contest you gave over your copyright to the administrators of the contest (this is common). If you mean it has been published in conjunction with the contest, then there are most likely terms of entering the contest that say they can publish it for free.

Any picture you take is automatically under your personal copyright. Someone else publishing it without your permission is illegal. (These laws get fuzzy when you post things on the internet.)

If you own the copyright, it is your property. If the camera software you used to transfer it is owned or copyrighted by another company, ehhem microsoft/apple, they can claim they own the DRM .
But by Federal Law if you filed and recieved a Copyright of Published Materials or Unpublished Materials you are the owner of said Materials.

You can make money on any photo that you take. As long as you have not sold the rights to someone else.
