He handed them Jim Edmonds, but the other two were signed by the Cards as free agents. And, in Spiezio's case, he even played for another team between those two, spending time with the Mariners.

I also wouldn't overstate the importance of Eckstein and Spiezio in winning the Series. It had a lot more to do with the Cards' great pitching and the play of guys like Pujols and Rolen all year than it did a completely overrated leadoff guy like Eck or a part-time player like Spiezio. How in the world they gave the MVP award to Eckstein, I'll never understand. I guess it's because he's gritty and has lots of heart.

Getting off my soapbox, I would agree that Stoneman has made some questionable moves. I think the signing of Bartolo Colon was dumb, given that he was starting to show signs of getting fat and lazy. At the same time, though, he's drafted guys like Weaver and Saunders, and he signed Santana as an amateur free agent.

I don't think he's the best GM in baseball, but he's far from the worst. They could probably find a replacement, but I don't think he deserves all the blame for their failings.

No, they shouldnt, he has helped to build one of the best minor league systems in baseball. When the players he has drafted come up to the majors people will be calling him as a GM God.

Yes, besides that, he hasn't gotten another bat to help Vlad carry the offense.
