When - the use of proto-money may date back to at least 100,000 B.C
Trading in red ochre is attested in Swaziland. Ochre seems to have functioned as a proto-money in Aboriginal Australia.
In cultures where metal working was unknown, shell or ivory jewellery were the most divisible, easily storable and transportable, scarce, and hard to counterfeit objects that could be made.
Why - to reduce the costs of less frequent transactions that were crucial to hunter-gatherer cultures, especially bride purchase, splitting property upon death, tribute, and intertribal trade in hunting ground rights (“starvation insurance”) and implements

money actually represents gold, hence the phrase, 'promise to pay the bearer'. This refers to the days when the bank of england held enough gold to equal the amount of money or notes with the phrase in circulation.
Money is effectively barter as no one carries gold, just its paper equivalent. so you might trade 0.00003grams of gold to buy some food, but get paid 0.00100grams each week, except you never have it, just the promise of !!!
The monetary system is fairly complex.

Here's some useless trivia for you, the word 'salary' comes from the Latin for 'salt' which 2000 years ago was almost as valuable as gold, and was what they paid the roman soldiers in, as it was valuable everywhere. Bet you didn't know that did you!
