I had one in my attic a month ago. I put some peanut butter on a rat trap (from Sears) and got him the first night. You want to trap them, not poison them. If you poison them, then they'll die, but you might not be able to find them and then they stink...
Thank goodness he didn't have friends...

Go to your local home improvement or sporting gods store and buy a live trap. Bait it with Peanut butter or some type of smelly meat like bologna. You will catch the rat alive. Take it outside and submerge in a basin of water and drown the bugger. Put him in a garbage bag and send him out in the trash. These traps are also good for squirrels and other small animals. Good luck.Smaller traps that kill don't always kill the rat dead at the moment the trap springs,if it's hurt it could crawl away and die in your wall and stink till it turns to bones.

Old school rat traps work the best. Not sure where you live, but its winter time and they like to come inside so I don't think they'll really "go away". Poison works good too. Walmart or hardware stores usually have an array of different things to use that work.

I concur, old school Victor rat traps are the best. I found that krazy gluing a kibble of dog food to the trap drives em nuts.

I use the rat sticky pads. I heard some rats in my house when it turned cold. I put out two (one under the bathroom sink and one uder the kitchen sink). I caught three on one and one on the other. They died on that sticky pad.
