At work today, my boss suggested we go out for a Thai meal in town. He said he's 'always wanted to get to know me' and that 'he wants to spoil me'. He is married, I am a straight man.

Tiff21 - I really don't think I can bring up sexual harrassment charges for someone asking me to go for a thai meal.

There is not enough information to come to a definitive conclusion, but, taking liberties with some assumptions, it looks to me that (a) you are a new employee, that; (b) the boss respects you for your knowledge, experience and insight. Unless and until you are sure, it would be unwise to make mental accusations.
However, if he "wants to get to know you better" in the biblical sense, I would recommend that you inform him clearly and forcefully, that you are not interested, that his advances are unwelcomed and you want them to stop. Inform him further that if the offensive behavior does not stop, or if you are retaliated against by or subject to any adverse employment action, you will be forced to take further action.
After the confrontation, write a "memo to self" narrative of the incident - date, time, place, principals (Mr. Jones and myself), potential witnesses (determine if they heard,/ saw anything), what was said/ done, reaction, etc. Make a copy, put the original in a sealed envelope and mail it to your home address (the date stamp on the envelope will be proof of mailing), DO NOT OPEN then put it in a secure place for future reference if necessary.
Use the copy in any inquiry/ investigation.

Why not suggest you go out for a quick after-work drink, say you have to get back for supper or something...that way, you can suss him out but won't be in the potentially embarrassing situation of having accepted to eat a meal with him...which is much more intimate than a quick drink!!!!

Let your boss know you are unavailable. Don't do anything you don't want to do. Boss or no boss. Just tell him you are very busy with the run up to christmas with family and friends and your girlfriend if you have one.

WHOA....At first I would be taken back by his comment. However, if he doesn't do anything further to make you feel uncomfortable, then let if go. If he does try to pursue you, set him straight (no pun intended). Tell him you are a happily straight man and are not interested.

Tell that bastard to buzz off, well, not like I just said, but tell him you're not interested and that's not appropriate. He's obviously got problems of the "closet kind" and trying to manipulate you by using "quid pro quo" harassment tactics....
G'Damn shame people do this sick sh** on the job!

I would very tactfully and very carefully decline .. just tell him that you're involved with a woman you've just met and you don't know where it's going as yet .. good luck !
