I heard that Canadians dont like it when US citizens say that, because Canadians are "Americans," too. Is this true? I wonder if it is also true for Mexicans, Brazilians, etc.

whether or not the whole continent is called north american or not, it's already been established in linguistic coummunities around the world that American refers to people from the Unites States of America. Canadians, Mexicans, and people from South American don't call or consider themselves Americans, so why would they be offended if we use the name?

"Are Canadians offended when US citizens call themselves "Americans?"?"
Some, probably not a majority. Canadians are not all the same except in one thing, they are Canadian.

The US is seen by many as having too much power and using this power in unfair ways over other countries, pushing its beliefs and interests on other countries because it can. Anyone who denies that this does happen is blind.

People feel that US influence in matters off US soil is too much, and that, to a degree, US government has too much power outside the US. This is not totally ridiculous because, as nations go, the US is very powerful in the world stage.

Some people feel that some US citizens are a little high up on their american horse. It might seem that, if some US citizen calls himself an american, he believes that america IS the US. For that reason it might annoy some people, but most Canadians probably have little concern for people from the US calling themselves americans.

Canadians are not Americans.
Just as Americans are not Russian.

US citizens can call themselves Americans.
Can't see how that would offend anybody.
The Americas cover a lot of territory but that does not mean every country has Americans in it.

I can't speak on behalf of other Canadians, but I'm not offended at all. I don't think I know one Canadian who refers to themselves or has a wish to call themselves 'American'.

Nothing that Americans say about Canadians or Canada bothers me any more. I've heard so many uneducated statements from them that it's clear that they're clueless about Canada. Once, when I was in the states, I was asked where I was from. When I said I was Canadian, he asked me how things were going in Canadia these days. On an other occasion When I said I was from Toronto Canada, she asked if I new her friend that lived in Canada, in Vancouver.

If anyone is offended by that, then they need to grow some thicker skin.

The things that "offend" people today are absolutely ridiculous. I wish the entire "political correctness" b.s. would die a slow, painful death.
