Rather than attempt to smooth over in a few days time the differences which have lasted since almost the time of man in that area of the world, we should've initially divided Iraq into zones (at least 3) like the way they did in Germany after the war. After each zone gets their act together they could then decide whether or not they would wish to form a united Iraq.

We won the 'conventional' war in about three weeks. Then came the occupation. Then came the civil war on top of the occpation. The Bush Junta was and still is unprepared and unable to cope with the situation that 'winning the war' part of the equation fostered. At this time to be truthful it's a civil war, sunni vs shiite, a war of resistance, sunni and shiite against the US military and their collaborators and a totally lame military 'occupation' that's going nowhere, mainly because it has nowhere to go...except on and on! Bush can delude himself all he wants, but if he's a 'war president' then he's a losing war president. The sooner this bum and his goofy cold war retread handlers get the hell out of Washington the better for everyone! At least then we can start to sort this #$%^ up out!

Make Iraq an RV parking lot and then all the world can enjoy it..If the people of that country are to stupid to turn the terrisost over then die. because if they don't then this crap will go on forever..Self gov'tment is not the answer..To much religion involved..Make it a parking lot for RV's and let God sort out who is good and who isn't..Those diaper heads don't have a clue..Look how they treat women! a disgrace to them..No way Jose..Let them all repent to whoever and the rest of the world will be safe until Syria and Iran start their crap then do the samething..All people in the world need to get along with one another..No one is better than the other. We all have red blood going thru our veins and we all get dressed the same way, sleep the same way, drive, eat etc etc..So why is superiority a big deal? unless yo u have countries that want to screw their own people because of religion or power control of the people..and those who want that need to get a bullet in the head..Think about all the children in this world who suffer because of GREED it's sickening. So people of the world who care speak up and be heard about the dump sh-- stuff the diaper heads are doing..and If you are a diaper head reading this get a life that soots all your people not the power hundgry clerics that don't have a clue..I don't speak for all but I'll bet I speak for allot people in the world who feel like I do..Get the drift of my message? I hope so!

The old fashion ed way:
1. Build permanent U.S. bases in Kurdistan. We have invested too much money in this country to pull out completely. And the Kurds love us.
2. Massive economic aid. That's why the war was so stupid. It committed us to yet another long term, open-ended foreign aid situation. General Barry Mccaffrey opined last week that the amount of annual economic aid to Iraq should be $10 billion of American taxpayer money per year. Get the Iraqis employed so they don't have to go to work for militias.

We need troops. We need enough troops to cover the borders. American troops shows be redeployed to cover Syrian and Iranian borders. Their purpose should be interdict supplies to sectarians and terrorists attempting to enter the country. This is a job the military is trained for and would handle well. The Iraqi forces should be tasked with internal security dealing directly with the sectarian violence. We should keep training contingents to continue efforts to strengthen the Iraqi forces. These contingents should be made up primarily of people with law enforcement experience. The majority of internal engagements would be considered urban in nature so police experience would lend itself to this type of training. As troop strength grows in the Iraqi military we should replace our troops on the border with Iraqi troops and begin the phased withdrawal. Without external support the sectarian violence will diminish. This further allows the Iraqis to deal with the Iraqis and reduces the American public face on the war.

What a great forum to get overly simplified answers from people who are not qualified to solve the problems in their own life, let alone a global issue. OK, you asked for it.
Somewhere in a cell near Baghdad sits a despotic dictator, who kept order in that country for 40 years. He understood the psychology of the Arabs and kept them in line with force. He ignored all diplomacy and international treaties to do this and it worked. His downfall came when he wanted to expand into the neighboring countries and he incurred the wrath of Bush 1. If Bush 2 had chosen to go after the Terrorists in Afghanistan and sent all of our troops there, we would not have the issues we have now. To the rest of the world Iraq does not fall into the realm of any threat to the US and never has.
However, now that we have kicked sand in all of the Arab countries faces, withdrawal will only cement the hatred of these peoples. What we need to do is divide and conquer. Give the northern provinces to the Kurds. Give the Eastern and Southern provinces to the Sunnis, and the Shiite nomads can have the rest. Saudi Arabia can train and support the Sunnis, the Iranis can train and support the Shiites, and the Kurds will take care of themselves.

Best way to "win" is to send more troops in there, to train more Iraqi troops and to catch more insurgents in less time. We just go crazy finding targets. We withdraw slowly, to make it look more victorious, and to make sure that nothing gets out of control when we start to withdraw.

I think it's about time the Americans leave the Iraqis alone and let them run their country however the hell they want. Why do the US have such a problem with it? They are trying to act all heroic when clearly, we know who the real terrorists are here.

Unfortunately, send in more troops to train the Iraqi army and police. The border with Iran also needs to be secured.
