I've read every Discworld book that there is and, yes, it is definitely for adults. The quirky humour, odd-ball characters and off-beat real world references made me howl.
The books are all related, often by Death (a favourite character of many readers) and by the mingling of character development. Not a "series" per se, but you're guaranteed to appreciate the story line if you start at "The Colour of Magic" and work your way through the thirty-some novels.

you don't need to read all of them in order, but there are some that you definitely should. The City Watch books, for example, starts with "Guards Guards," and if you read, say, "Thief of Time," you might very well enjoy it, but you would not get the full experience from the book if you had read all of the prior city watch novels.
Take a look at some websites on Discworld, and you'll be able to find a breakdown of which books stand alone and which comprise a series of the same main characters.
The Discworld novels are a mix of fantasy/humour, and Bristish humour, at that. You don't totally need to understand british pop culture or the references Pratchett makes, though, to enjoy the books, but he is one of the few writers that makes me laugh out loud. WHile they are not as dark as the Potter books have become, you do need a certain maturity to appreciate the humor. The books are very enjoyable, and I recommend them all.

Oh absolutely I can recommend them, they're a hoot. I'm over 40 and have read almost all of them. Each one is a complete story but some of the characters appear in other stories.
No you don't have to read them in any particular order only a few are sequential, I suggest going to the library or a book store and have a look at the synopsis that may give you an idea which one's in the series require prior knowledge. Alternatively there are I believe websites that can help you.
Hope you enjoy reading them.

It is a series, but each book can stand alone.
In the collection of Discworld books there are several character arcs (books that feature as their main characters the witches, the Watch, Death/Susan, Rincewind and the Wizards, etc.) that can be seen as individual series. If you read them in the order they were published, you'll get some of the inside jokes, but it's not necessary.
Lspace.org has a ton of information.
I'd start with the Watch (I think Guards! Guards! is the first one in that arc).

The Discworld series is really, really good. It's not a series in the same sense as the Dark Tower series, it's just a world with lots of characters in it. Characters who are supporting players in one book may take the lead in another. There's kind of a rough chronological order to them, and it helps to read them in order to better understand the characters, but it's not strictly necessary. The Wikipedia article at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discworld has some information that might help you, as well as a list of books in order. Some of the later books are hit-or-miss in my opinion, but the earlier ones are wonderful. I recommend them for anyone to read.
And if you're new to fantasy and liked The Dark Tower, try "Neverwhere" by Neil Gaiman. It's a really good dark fantasy novel that is kind of similar in that it's set in a world similar to ours but different - a dark world underneath London. Truly great book that I love trying to get people to read :-) Gaiman is one of the best fantasy authors out there just now, but a lot of people haven't heard of him. If you're really looking to experiment, take a look at his Sandman series (http://www.amazon.com/Preludes-Nocturnes-Sandman-Vol-1/dp/1563890119/sr=1-2/qid=1166141604/ref=pd_bbs_2/102-9532857-6636966?ie=UTF8&s=books)
