I don't think most people knew it to begin with. It has a long history (older than Christ) which has been discussed and described at length here on other similar questions. Take a look.
Maybe the "true" meaning is different for different people and that's OK, and we shouldn't worry how other people celebrate (or don't celebrate) their holiday.

it's a sad truth that people do forget - or dont celebrate that true meaning at all. Thats why i try to bring it up or share a bit of God wherever I go just to keep the real Christmas spirit alive. say "Merry Christmas" instead of happy holidays. We're celebrating CHRISTmas. not Santa. And saying God Bless - or putting up a nativity. I saw a house the other day and on the garage there was a sign hanging that said "Emmanuel - Christ is born". I thought that was great (: We can't make people celebrate Jesus - but we can keep that spirit alive ourselves. and be proud of our Savior and happy! And maybe that will rub off on the people in our lives. Maybe it might make them a little curious as to find out what Christmas is really all about! (:

Its not 'Have people forgotten...?' its people 'HAVE forgotten the true meaning of Christmas.' Even Christians forget the meaning. Yes they know the meaning, they know about the birth of the Son of God, but we can still get caught up with the mad rush of the season and forget that gifts, food, decorations, and all that stuff aren't at all that important.

Some have, but I don't think I or my family has, nor many of my friends. Gifts, prezzies, and good food and company is nice, but to remember the true meaning of Christmas, ahQ Therein is the richness of the saying "Peace and goodwill to all.'

Well, I hope people have only lost sight of Christmas' true meaning, not actually forgotten it. Of course the lord of THIS world tries to distract everyone from the awesome miracle of the Savior's birth by glamorizing materialism, covetousness, and greed and, I'm sad to say, he often succeeds.

Depends what you mean by the true meaning of Christmas. Western Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus, even though we don't know when he was born. People were eating, drinking and making merry over the winter solstice long before Jesus was born. Western Christianity only got in on the act in the 4th century. Eastern Christians don't celebrate Jesus's birthday.

Unfortunately, I believe that is the case today. People are so consumed with finding the latest or best gift, make their way to the stores and lose their humanity (not to mention their patience) in so many ways... and yes, forget that the true values of the season. It is really not about the presents, Christmas is meant to be celebrating Jesus' birth and spend time with those you truly hold dear to you. I will be doing that when I come home next week.

In a way. The clammering to get the newest game system or the popular toy that the retailers try to convince parents their child HAS to have to feel loved is absolutely ridiculous. And, some consumers buy into it. Crazy, huh? I do like to think, though, after all the presents, all the delicious food, all the love felt in our homes when we all say goodnight, we remember our prayers and thank God for Jesus.
Merry Christmas....Peace on earth.

Impossible.
Christmas doesn't have a TRUE meaning. Never did and never will. It's a real tragedy. What is supposed to be the true meaning by Christians is a lie, a fiction. It is UNTRUE and dishonest.
I reclaim the word TRUE in the name of TRUTH. Christians have abused that word with reckless abandon and cannot be trusted with it. The same goes for Muslims.
